Northwood PTA

Northwood Art Docent Program

The Art Walk is at the end of the school year (usually May), when we transform the school into an art gallery. Shortly after the Art Walk, student artwork will be sent home.

What is an art docent?

There are no art teachers in the Puyallup School District elementary schools, therefore Northwood PTA sponsors the
Art Docent Program.  An art docent is a volunteer who presents a famous piece of artwork and facilitates an art project each month in their child’s classroom.  The goal is to open the children's eyes to the wonderful world of art.  Art docents do not need to have artistic talent nor do they need high-level knowledge of art.  If you generally enjoy art, you are eligible to be an art docent!

What is the art docent program?

This non-profit visual arts outreach program provides volunteers with the training and material they need to present high quality visual arts programs in local elementary schools each month for eight months during the school year.  It is sponsored by the Green River Community College Foundation and supplies are purchased by the PTA.

Who can be an art docent?

Any parent or community member with an approved volunteer application on file with the school can volunteer as an art docent.  Most art docents are assigned to their child’s classroom.  We encourage art docents to team up (two or more per classroom) and teach the art projects together or teach alternate months throughout the school year.
